#11

HEDIN, Sven,
A Transzhimalája

(Transhimalaya)

First Edition 1910
Second Edition 191?

The account of the Hedin's 1906-1908 journey into Tibet, translated and re-worked from the swedish manuscript by Alfréd Kondor. This title is anomalous in several ways. On the Roman numeral versions, it received the number XIII-XIV. Assigning a double number to a single volume either indicated that originally it was intended as a double volume, or perhaps another title was intended but never published. In any case, the Roman numbering stops here, there is no XV in the series. Lóczi himself mentions in the foreword to this volume that this was the last title produced under his editorship out of the intended 12 (however only 11 were actually produced, in 13 volumes), maybe the double volume is to cover for this inconsistency. To further add confusion, vol. XII (#10 Scott) was released a year later, however conforming to Lóczi's word and the roman numbering, this title is considered #11 in the series. The picture cover version is also anomalous as it has the picture decoration impressed into the cover, rather than a glued print. As this was the period when Lóczi was leaving the Society and Cholnoky was taking over, it is quite possible that this volume was prepared by Lóczi, but the final production was already overseen by Cholnoky, as two of the three immediately following titles edited by Cholnoky also have impressed rather than glued picture on the cover. The first edition exists in the Picture cover and Roman numeral binding versions, with the series volume on the half title. The second edition appears to be identical except for the series volume numbering. Aside the expected Classic I. Scaled and full cloth Picture cover versions, there is also a half-cloth version of the Picture cover binding as vell as a plain Classical I, implying the title was re-issued in the early twenties with an unchanged content, however all versions are very rare.
