STEIN, Aurél
Homokba temetett városok

(Sand-Buried Cities)

First Edition 1908
Second Edition 191?
Third Edition 192?
Fourth Edition 192?

The account of Stein's first (1900-1901) voyage to Central Asia, being a popuar account of the expedition and the principal archaeological discoveries in the Tarim Basin. The book is a slightly abridged and re-worked version of Stein's 1904 Sand-Buried Ruins of Khotan, translated from English by Gyula Halász. It is one of the more common early titles, with two editions before the War, a third in the early twenties, and a fourth edition in the mid-late twenties. In the first three editions the text and illustrations are substantially the same, with 38 illustrations dispersed among the text, 12 plates, two fold-out panorama photos and one map. However it appears that aside the usual roman series volume numbers and the "Cs. és Kir." title on the spine of the Picture cover binding, there is also a slight mismatch in pagination between the first and second editions. Both are 326 pages but in the second edition chapters after the first quarter start a page later, and also the frontspiece is missing. The second edition appeared in the full cloth Picture cover and Classic I scaled binding versions. Apparently after the war a third edition appeared that had the same pagination as the second edition, but the frontspiece portrait was inserted, and subtle changes on some pages prove that it is a totally new print layout. This third edition is is known in Classic I. and half cloth Picture cover binding versions. The fourth edition, which appeared in 1927 or 1928, is markedly different, with Cholnoky as series editor on the half title (but still Lóczy on the cover of the Classic II. version, one of two such titles), with illustrations on separate plates rather than dispersed among the text.
