MUFK #1

HEDIN, Sven
Pekingtöl Moszkváig

(From Peking to Moscow)
First Edition 1924?
Second Edition 1925

An account of a voyage made accross Siberia in 1923-24, translated from swedish by Dr. Balassa József. There is strong circumstantial evidence that this Hedin title launched the MUFK series. It is the only one that appeared in the Picture cover binding greatly resembling that of the MFTK series, with endpapers matching that of the early plain Classic I version of the MFTK series. An owner's inscription firmly dates a Picture cover copy to 1925. The bibliographical references are split between 1924 and 1925 for the title. It is possible that the Picture cover version appeared in late 1924, as the original Swedish edition was published mid-1924. The difference between the first and second editions are the lack of the frontspiece photo of Hedin, and the lack of a map at the end of the book. The title pages and the text with photos (between text, not on separate plates) are identical in all known versions. The first edition is known in the Picture cover and Plain Crimson versions (with identical endpapers), and curiously also in a Classic III. cover that has MFTK series title rather than the expected MUFK series title (however inside there is no series half title), which almost certainly post-dates the first second edition version. The second edition is confirmed in the Classic II. and Classic III. bindings with MUFK series titles, the first probably dating from 1925. The Classic III. binding with MUFK series titles probably dates from the late twenties or early thirties. A half cloth binding version with crimson boards and gilt globe is also known, probably dating from the late thirties, it is assumed to have second edition interior, however this awaits confirmation. It is assumed but not confirmed that a Plain Crimson second edition may also exist. The dust jacket is known, associated with the Picture cover version. It is assumed that all the other versions had the same, however at present this is impossible to ascertain.
