Unidentified (4) (Hypolithic algae sp.)

Observations:

  • Western Gilf Kebir
  • Southern Great Sand Sea (Libyan Desert Glass area)

Hypolithic algae were noted at several locations on the underside of translucent quartz pebbles, and are particularly common in the Libyan Desert Glass area, many times forming thick clusters on the underside of LDG specimens embedded in the soil. Some were also noted along the western side of the Gilf Kebir, near "Three castles", all in environments void of any other plant life.
