Panicum turgidum

Observations:

  • Karkur Talh (Jebel Uweinat)
  • Karkur Murr (Jebel Uweinat)
  • Karkur Ibrahim (Jebel Uweinat)
  • Hassanein Plateau (Jebel Uweinat)
  • Wadi Hamra (Gilf Kebir)
  • Wadi Abd el Melik (Gilf Kebir)

The species is closely associated with Acacia raddiana, is only found in valleys which also support a growth of trees. The grass is generally limited to the bed of the watercourse that becomes wet following the infrequent rains. The tufts of Panicum grass remain dormant in a totally dry state, and immediately turn green once moistened, as noted in Karkur Talh following the rains of 2005. In a few sheltered areas of Karkur Talh fresh growth was noted even in dry periods. The species also grows in the vicinity of springs in Karkur Murr, where it is in a perpetually green state. One green tuft was noted in the main valley on the Hassanein Plateau (in close vicinity to Acacia trees), the sole observation outside the main watercourses.
